Beta Rules and Reinforcements for the Custodes

Today, we have a fantastic treat for all stalwart guardians of the Emperor. Ever since the release of Codex: Adeptus Custodes, you guys have been asking when the range of incredible Legio Custodes miniatures from Forge World would be getting Warhammer 40,000 rules. Well, the answer is… right now!

This article was originally published on the Warhammer-community site. And no, these rules will not be in effect for the 40k Champs event for the LVO 2019.

The tech-archivists have scoured the vaults and unearthed a set of Adeptus Custodes Beta Datasheets. There are no fewer than 12 new units for the Golden Legion, including a variety of vehicles, ranging from speedy grav-vehicles to mighty Dreadnoughts. There’s also the devastating Orion Assault Dropship, which can carry Custodes into battle as well as devastate foes in a hail of heavy gunfire.

You’ll also find new infantry units for your Adeptus Custodes, such as mighty Aquilon Terminators in their nigh-impenetrable armour, and the Sagittarum Guard, who can fire devastating armour-piercing disintegration beams from their Adrastus bolt calivers, adding heavy firepower to your force.

Download the beta rules now and start planning the next additions to your army – and remember to let us know how you get on with them so we can make these units fitting additions to the Ten Thousand.

You’ll also find a brand-new unit in the beta rules – Venatari Custodians. These are a fast-moving formation within the Legio Custodes, charged with hunting threats to the Throneworld from above. Using winged flight packs known as auramite pinions, they’re a fast, responsive and deadly addition to your Talons of the Emperor (or Adeptus Custodes) forces.

This resin kit contains 54 components, which build 3 Venatari, including a choice of archaeotech kinetic destroyers and Tarsus bucklers, or mighty Venatari lances. You can download their Horus Heresy rules and pre-order the models right now.

Great rule for the game overall, but does seem to water down the Death Guard legion trait even more. Now a lot of people will be able to fire back at the same range. Wish the trait was just a flat +6″ to the range of weapons like the Tau one, instead of just +6″ to rapid-fire range.

Death Guard are still advantaged over other armies when advancing, and considering that they have outperformed CSM, SM, BA, SW, DA, and often 1kSons as well, I don’t really feel like they are exactly suffering in the gutter when it comes to other marine matchups.

Nice models and rules. With this u can build nice looking army. What i found funny is the melee weapon option for the Aquilon custodians (the models look so good)

The fist is S2x -4AP D3 dmg for 13pt with no unwieldy -1 to hit (btw better the the watchers axe of Trajjan Valoris) and u can change this awesome weapon for the talons +1S -2AP 1dmg u can re-roll wound rolls for 9 pt. ???? i mean this is the same datasheet. The rules team should practice some basic mathematics.

Forge World has always been really, really bad at writing rules.

Guhhhhhh.. just getting into Custodes and those FW model rules are awful. MW’s on a to-hit roll of a 1 for a str 5 -3 3 dmg gun for an elite army? That’s *terrible*.

The jet pack dudes are eghh too for an army that has Custodes jetbikes.

Eh, that gun is mostly fine; Custodes get rerolls just like everyone else, so the chances of taking a wound from it are pretty low and the profile is extremely strong with that fixed 3dmg. The Heavy 2 version of it on the jetbike is absolutely awful, though.

Quite a few of the units also seem like “why do these exist” units. The “we have a fancy spear” version, for example, don’t really… do anything interesting, and the alternative jetbikes are just a straight downgrade and most things.

Pretty sure the 3 damage is a typo and they mean d3. All the other weapons in that category, including the heavy version have damage d3.
Similar things happened in the indexs.

All of the Adrasite/Adranthic weapons are fixed damage 3, not d3.

Actually… it looks like they’re split about 50/50. Weird.

I’m quite the fan of the Caladius tank going down in points. I tried using it before but now with PotMS and 5++, I might take it out again. Also the Achillus dread is downright awesome imo.

I was hoping the Saggitarum would be a troop choice, a guardian with a ranged weapon…alas they don’t seem that great.

Oh well, just happy to see rules put out…now to get Mechanicus rules out of Forge World!

Huh. Is the Contemptor-Exemplar not a thing anymore? It was in the first round of datasheets, but not anymore, and I’m pretty sure it doesn’t actually have a model.

And damn, those units. FW rules writing is spotty at best, but you’d think they’d put their stuff side to side and think “hey, am I maybe making this unit a strict downgrade from this other one at similar or greater points cost?”.
