So the answer for the Scions doesn’t clearly answer the ongoing question of do Scions lose their Storm Trooper doctrine if you take a Valkyrie with them. I sent an e-mail to the rules team a week or so ago asking about that and haven’t heard back.

So for the LVO will scions keep their doctrine if you take a Valkyrie with them?

    • J January 14, 2019 9:52 am #

Page 132 of the astra militarum codex has the rules.
In the section REGIMENTAL DOCTRINES, it says that units “gain a Regimental Doctrine, so long as every unit in that Detachment… is drawn from the same regiment”.

Under Militarum Tempestus it does say that all units “do not themselves benefit from any Regimental Doctrine unless every unit in that Detachment is from the Militarum Tempestus”. The language is essentially the same.

However, in the next section under Advisors and Auxilla it specifically identifies a list of units including AERONAUTICA IMPERIALIS units, that can be included as an exception to the above rules.

Seems 100% clear to me. You can include Valyries, Commissars, and Ratlings in a Scion detachment and still get your Storm Trooper Doctrine, so long as you don’t include a units with a different

      • Lysere January 15, 2019 8:14 am #

“That unless every unit” wording is exactly the issue for some people. I know it seems obvious and I’m hoping it never comes up but having a official ruling I can point to would be nice.

I did e-mail the rule team who are probably drowning in stuff to do so I don’t expect a quick response.

Ooof. Not that anyone was using him, but they made Harkaan Worldclaimer even worse. They should just make him act like a Chapter Master for all raptors and give his spear a melee profile.

And this was their chance to errata point values for the Knight Castellan. Missed opportunity.

    • mehville January 14, 2019 10:25 am #

fact people still thought harkaan would go on buffing non BL raptors goes beyond logic … it was a matter of time

      • CWDub January 14, 2019 11:26 am #

I mean, Warhammer Community did preview his rules as buffing non-BL raptors..

      • J January 14, 2019 11:57 am #

I think it was more a matter of him being terrible, but at least being able to buff non-BL raptors was sort of interesting, I guess.

They even pointed out on the Warhammer community page that his buff wasn’t just for Black Legion. Since it was pretty weak to begin with, I think the collective response was meh, sure, why not.

There’s probably some poor Night Lords player out there who was trying to make Haarken work because of the sweet model, but alas, foiled.

I know a lot of Chaos players and a lot of narrative players and even they weren’t willing to shell out $35 for Haarken to actually use as Haarken. Obviously, someone did though.

      • Ujayim January 15, 2019 7:09 am #

        Lol

And now, 24 hours later, GW changes him back.

Still garbage, but slightly less garbage now.

    • abusepuppy January 14, 2019 11:00 am #

Yeah, it’s pretty baffling that they took a look at Harkaan, who is a complete pile of trash anyways, and decided “Man, we had better reign this guy in or people are gonna totally abuse him by putting him in a detachment with non-BL Raptors for some reason.”

Can you imagine that terrible, Black Mirror-esque world? Those S4 melee attacks just _running rampant_ over the tournament scene? The mind shudders.

      • CWDub January 14, 2019 11:40 am #

Dude, he was wreaking havoc by racking up those character kills for +1 attack. UNSTOPPABLE

        • abusepuppy January 15, 2019 4:36 am #

Yeah, with that Sx3 AP-8 Dmg10 spear of his, he was pretty unstoppable.

Weird that they forgot to include the profile in the FAQ, though.

      • Ujayim January 14, 2019 11:43 am #

Next you’re gonna tell me they tried to sell him in a box set with 3 boxes of raptors for $150. Not possible.

        • abusepuppy January 15, 2019 4:37 am #

Don’t worry, for $150 it probably was only two boxes of Raptors.

      • Sad Rubric Spammer January 14, 2019 4:09 pm #

It feels more like rules team wanted him to be BL only, but forgot to type it out and sent the stuff to community team who spot lighted it. But now rules team is fixing their mistake.

BUT that makes it FEEL like a bait and switch, which feels really shitty, especially considering the dubious usefulness he had before.

Hopefully they will have something addressing it tomorrow or later this week because that was the main thing they talked about when previewing him and the facebook comments section was a shitshow when I went to take a look. God bless their facebook team, though. Those guys have the patience of a saint.

  3. JimV January 14, 2019 10:41 am #

Will these be in effect for LVO?

  4. abusepuppy January 14, 2019 11:01 am #

Limiting the Windrider/Wraithost to non-Ynnari detachments is interesting; there’s no reason in the text to expect that they shouldn’t be able to use it, so it’s a bit surprising- especially because neither feels excessively abusable. But I suppose Ynnari are strong enough they don’t really need any other benefits, though it might be nice to see something aside from the usual Spears/Reapers once in a while.

    • NinetyNineNo January 14, 2019 11:17 am #

Are Wraith and Windrider Hosts at any risk of overtaking Ynnari Spears/Reapers, though? They look fun and thematic, but hardly competitive (despite the brave attempt at making scatbikes a thing again).

      • abusepuppy January 14, 2019 4:24 pm #

Overtaking? No. But I know that some pretty good players were intending to use them, which will probably throw a wrench in their plans.

  5. NinetyNineNo January 14, 2019 11:15 am #

Looking like someone at GW got their eye poked by Haarken, huh.

  6. Ujayim January 14, 2019 11:41 am #

Ah, good, The FAQ FAQ, gonna have to get a backpack for my backpack to contain the books for my books soon.

    • Stephen January 14, 2019 12:55 pm #

I got a new computer and had to re-download some of my codexes. I noticed at least some of the errata and points have been updated in the digital copies. These were the regular epub versions as well.

      • Ujayim January 14, 2019 1:41 pm #

Personally just not a fan of digital documents. If it causes me to carry a few extra items, that’s fine, but I’d rather have the physical one than digital at the end of the day.

  7. Paul Winters January 14, 2019 12:21 pm #

I was hoping that the Infernal Enrapturess would get a point adjustment in either the Chapter Approved or Wrath & Rapture, FAQs. The Wrath & Rapture rules insert was definitely pre Chapter Approved 2018 which makes her slightly unpalatable with a higher point cost compared to peer herald units.

    • abusepuppy January 14, 2019 4:26 pm #

Yeah, she does feel a little bit expensive, although in fairness they tend to err on the cautious side with new units most of the time and her anti-psyker aura is fairly strong. But Slaanesh can probably use all the help it can get.

      • Paul Winters January 15, 2019 7:49 am #

For Chaos Daemon soup Infernal Enrapturess’ is an interesting choice for psychic defense. With additional synergy from the Daemonic Possession stratagem. That anti-psyker aura is all she is really bringing to the table in Matched Play.

For pure Slaanesh, since she is in competition with a Herald of Slaanesh or the Masque.

She is a little pricey at 80pts because she isn’t a psyker (like the Masque). If she was maybe 65-70pts, she would be a little more of a compelling pick in my opinion.

  8. red3_standingby January 14, 2019 9:17 pm #

It seemed like this would be a good opportunity for them to provide points changes for the codices that weren’t out when Chapter Approved went to print. I guess they’ll just have to wait until next year. That’s not sooo bad, but I do feel for Space Wolves and Harlequins players. waiting sixteen (16!) and nineteen (19!) months for a points decrease is going to be ballbusting.

It’s been making its way around the internet that in responding to someone complaining about the FAQs, whoever is running the GW responses on Facebook said that they’re only employing ten people to playtest the game and make these changes. That certainly strikes me as foolish, but it does explain how they can miss major things. I just wish that they were more willing to acknowledge what they’ve missed when they come around to doing the FAQ of the book. Maybe it’s time for the points changes to be a digital release, so it can keep up with the pace of the community. Let Chapter Approved stick around as a compendium of new rules, missions, etc.

    • red3_standingby January 14, 2019 9:41 pm #

Unrelated to the FAQs, but it doesn’t look like there’s an article on FLG about it:

What do people think about the new Crimson Fists rules? They seem very good.

      • abusepuppy January 15, 2019 12:36 am #

Short version? They’re not bad. The trait itself is fairly solid and will do you good against a lot of the horde armies out there, and some of the other options available to them (warlord, etc) are decent as well. But it’s not so exceptional as to overturn the way Space Marines already function and I’m not even sure it’s good enough for them to give up Ghillieman for, at least from a strictly competitive perspective.

        • ghostvalley January 15, 2019 7:45 am #

AP’s assessment is spot on, IMO. I’ve used the rules a few times and have even tried to mix in their Vigilus stuff. I found the tactic to be great against the ork and necrons lists I played – and it is a neat little bonus for Attack Bikes if you are playing brigade as they have an easy chance of getting the plus to hit against anything they shoot at minus vehicles or single models – and I think it is leaps better than the majority of marine tactics though Ultras are still tops.

But the no minus to hit 3 damage powerfist was epic for 9pts.

    • Rob Butcher January 15, 2019 2:49 am #

GW have 10 folks in the Design Studio working on W40k (double what it was a few years ago.) How many do similar games have ? Maybe a couple in a garage ?

They do though have two networks of official playtesters who compete regularly – most of the changes made were made to clarify/ stop cheats and poor sportsmanship. Two of the new playtesters are fighting the battle report in this months White Dwarf (fought six months ago).

      • Chad January 15, 2019 4:31 am #

Clearly however many people they have playtesting is not enough, or they are the wrong people.

The argument that they have more than other game companies makes little sense when their size is taken into account.

        https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.bbc.com/news/amp/uk-england-nottinghamshire-45019803

A company making 200+ million pounds should be able to get most things right. They need to hire more qualified people to help them.

  9. Rob Butcher January 15, 2019 2:43 am #

Reading the FAQs it’s clear folks were gaming the changes, rather than sticking to the core rules

eg- we shouldn’t need to be told that Stratagems apply to a unit once
    NOR that grenades aren’t 6″ range;

I’ve made the changes to the new books and laughed at how some folks tried to justify their poor sportsmanship.

    • abusepuppy January 15, 2019 4:34 am #

Not all grenades in the game are 6″ range. Like the Tau ones, for example.

And while it was fairly clear that the +1A strat was intended to be limited to being used on each unit only once, it didn’t actually say that, and there are lots of stratagems that _can_ be used multiple times before the game starts. So maybe be a little less high and mighty about how everyone else is a filthy cheater and come sit down on the ground with us mere mortals who play the game by the rules, rather than by divine revelation?
