DzC Battle Report #9: Destroy/Defend the City, PHR (Defender) vs Shaltari (Attacker)

This was our first time trying out the “other” mission that comes with the Orbital Defense Laser mission pack, the Attacker/Defender scenario called “Destroy/Defend the City”. We found it deeply flawed, but we came up with some suggestions for ways to improve it. Let us know what you think!

    A couple of thoughts:

I don’t think collapsing buildings hit dropships, unless those dropships are landed.
The supercruise missile still hits a buildings on a 2+ Always.

But I agree on the mission, more damage points is the way to go. It would be interesting to see if invincible makes it too hard on the defender.

If destroying the building is necessary to win as the defender, then the building needs more/less points depending on the army sizes. If it’s not necessary, then as you say just make it invincible, or 50pts.

Did you make sure you use Ar 8 for the laser too?

I think it should be that the laser is arm 10 and you can start with guys in it.

I don’t believe we took out any dropships with the collapsing building, just the Haven gate when the laser went down and the Angelos skimmer when he shot the laser at my side of the board.

As per the mission, we used Armor 9 on the laser, with active countermeasures and 20dp… so it was even tougher than a medium hardened building.

I don’t think it’s necessary for the defender to blow up the laser in order to win, but it is necessary for the defender to commit to a strategy. If the defender is going to try to blow up the laser, by the rules none of their own infantry can be inside (that’s why I vacated the laser on turn 1). It’s an all-or-nothing strategy. If the laser had 50dp, this strategy would be much riskier and less attractive, and I think most people would go for an infantry-heavy approach.

And yes… someone on the Hawk forums pointed out my mistake with Supercruise. That makes the Athena better!

That laser does look boss, though! We need to get our hands on one of those.
